An event that blooms in the capital
Parque del Oeste is preparing to welcome botany lovers and floral beauty with the 70th edition of the International New Roses Competition Villa de Madrid, an event that promises to be a feast for the senses. From 15th to 20th May, this iconic park will host not only expert growers but also citizens wishing to participate in the selection of their favourite rosebush.
This year, 25 specialised growers from 12 countries, including Germany, Japan, and South Africa, will present a total of 82 new varieties. Diversity is one of the hallmarks of the competition, where roses compete in six different categories. According to Miguel Ángel García Martínez, in charge of the Environment at the Rose Garden, this contest is unique because only varieties that are not yet available on the market are allowed.
Aside from the competition, the event will feature a series of cultural and educational activities aimed at all ages. On the last day of the competition, 20th May, there will be children's workshops on nature and the environment, as well as an outdoor concert by the Arcos School Orchestras. Additionally, those who vote for their favourite rosebush will receive a cut rose as a gift.
The Rose Garden was inaugurated in 1955, becoming a true living museum with over 20,000 rosebushes since then. This green space is not only a place to admire flowers; it also represents a continuous effort to conserve and promote the historical evolution of this cherished plant. With nearly 800 distinct varieties, each visit offers a new visual and olfactory experience.
Those participating in the popular competition will have the chance not only to choose their preferred rosebush but also to enter an exclusive draw where they can win ten rose plants. The most voted variety will be awarded the title ‘Rose of Madrid 2026‘, which represents a significant recognition within the horticultural world.
