A trip with great economic expectations
With just 60 days until his arrival, Pope Leo XIV is generating significant anticipation in Spain, not only for his religious figure but also for the expected economic impact. The organisation of the trip has estimated that this event could leave a economic impact exceeding 100 million euros. This figure was shared at a recent press conference attended by several key members of the organising team.
The general coordinator of the event, Yago de la Cierva, explained that while some cities and venues that the pope will visit are known, the official schedule has yet to be confirmed by the Holy See. “We are waiting for final details about the agenda,” commented De la Cierva, who also emphasised the importance of being patient while awaiting this crucial information.
Collaboration with public administrations has been fundamental to the success of this project. According to De la Cierva, both the Ministry of the Presidency and local authorities have shown a positive and fluid commitment. However, the initial costs of the trip are estimated at least 15 million euros, which poses significant logistical challenges given that it will cover multiple cities and activities over seven days.
Despite the current limitations on the official programme, interesting proposals have emerged from the organising committee. A funny anecdote mentioned that it was suggested the famous driver Fernando Alonso drive the popemobile during one of the journeys; however, this idea was quickly dismissed due to established protocols.
As the travel dates approach, numerous requests have come in to include visits to iconic sites. Among them stands out a possible visit to the Sagrada Familia, coinciding with the centenary of Antoni Gaudí. This has led to speculation about whether there could be any announcement related to his beatification during this visit.

Unlike other similar events where there was direct government funding, this trip will primarily rely on private contributions and sponsorships. The Spanish Church seeks to cover much of the costs through donations and in-kind resources provided by local businesses and institutions. Additionally, external audits are planned to ensure transparency in how these funds are used.
