Josetxo Vera, director of the Information Office of the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE), clarified that the competent authorities had dismissed the idea due to security reasons. “We were told from security that no; the Pope's vehicle must be driven by a national police officer,” Vera explained in response to persistent questions.
Apart from the restrictions imposed by official protocols, other factors also contributed to dismissing this unusual collaboration. Alonso's current advertising commitments with Aston Martin, as well as his tight schedule due to the Monaco Grand Prix scheduled for June 7, made his participation in this unique event almost impossible.
