A New Educational Horizon in Madrid
The President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has presented an innovative project aimed at transforming the region into a global benchmark for higher education. During the inauguration of the new rector of the University of Alcalá, Carmelo García, Ayuso outlined the main features of the plan called Madrid, University Region. This ambitious programme not only includes the construction of new student housing but also promotes the intensive use of artificial intelligence (AI) and an expanded cultural and sports offering.
The announcement was initially made in March when Ayuso revealed that investment in scientific research would increase by 34%, reaching 752 million euros by 2029. This investment is designed to strengthen the academic ecosystem in Madrid and facilitate access to higher education through the Vive Plan, which aims to build more student residences. This approach seeks to alleviate pressure on the residential market and provide suitable housing solutions for young people.
One of the most notable proposals of the plan is the continuous opening of university campuses throughout the year, especially in summer. According to Ayuso, this will allow the facilities to be filled with academic and cultural activities, making Madrid an attractive destination for both local and international students. "We want our universities to be vibrant spaces where students can study and enjoy at the same time," she stated.
The development of the Vive University Plan will be based on a public-private collaboration model. This will enable the Community of Madrid to mobilise significant investments by making land available for new housing projects. The idea is not only to build accommodations but also to create conducive environments for study and the emotional well-being of students.
Ayuso also emphasised her desire to turn Madrid into an international house of Higher Education, particularly promoting the Spanish language. With over 600 million speakers worldwide, this initiative aims to attract international students interested in learning or perfecting their Spanish while accessing quality higher education.
Ayuso reaffirmed her commitment to Madrid's public universities by announcing a multi-year agreement that allocates nearly 14.8 billion euros by 2031. This agreement includes a specific allocation for the University of Alcalá, representing a significant increase aimed at strengthening its academic and research capabilities.
