Fuenlabrada has taken a significant step towards enhancing the educational environment with the expansion of the ‘Cuidamos la Escuela’ programme, which will be implemented in all public Early Childhood and Primary Education schools in the municipality starting next school year. This initiative, promoted by the Education Department, aims not only to optimise the maintenance and cleaning of educational centres but also to encourage greater involvement from the entire school community in caring for their facilities.
The main novelty of the programme is that cleaning staff will work during school hours, allowing them to interact directly with students, teachers, and families. According to the City Council, this measure seeks to make their daily work more visible and facilitate their integration into the everyday life of educational centres. The Councillor for Education, Ana Pérez, emphasises that “it is not just about cleaning; there is a very important educational and social component.”
The organisational change means that the workers responsible for keeping classrooms, bathrooms, and common areas clean will be present during the mornings. This not only improves the hygienic conditions of the school environment but also promotes healthy habits among students regarding the care and respect for their shared spaces.
Since its inception two years ago in selected centres, the programme has proven to be effective. The City Council has received positive feedback about “very satisfactory results,” which has led to its expansion to nearly all public schools in Fuenlabrada. This innovative approach is similar to initiatives implemented in other European countries where the aim is to integrate non-teaching staff into the educational process to strengthen values such as shared responsibility.
