A new educational era in Madrid
The Community of Madrid is preparing for a significant transformation in its educational system, with the expansion of the Basic General Education (EGB) model that will allow students to continue their education without needing to change schools. This innovative approach will be implemented in more than 100 schools starting from the next academic year, representing a notable advancement in secondary education.
The regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, recently announced that 49 new educational centres will be authorised to teach 1st and 2nd year of ESO. This measure will benefit approximately 5,000 students, who will be able to complete their secondary studies in the same place where they finished primary school. The decision aims to combat school failure and improve academic performance, providing a familiar and known environment for young students.
As this new system is implemented, schools will need to undertake structural reforms to adapt their facilities to the educational needs of secondary education. This includes the creation of new classrooms and laboratories suitable for the corresponding subjects. Educational area technicians have evaluated each centre to ensure they have the necessary space before the start of the 2026-2027 academic year.
The regional government has emphasised that this initiative will not only facilitate educational continuity but also aims to improve healthy habits among students and foster a conducive learning environment. With this expansion, it is expected to reduce dropout rates and provide a more comprehensive education from an early age.
The list of new centres includes schools spread throughout the region, covering both urban and rural areas. Among them, institutions located in municipalities such as Alcalá de Henares, Coslada, and Alcorcón stand out. In total, 35 municipalities will have at least one school offering these educational levels under the new model.
Aside from the advancement in secondary education, a significant expansion in school meal scholarships has also been announced. A total of 146,100 students will receive this financial support during the current academic year, representing a 15% increase compared to the previous year. This assistance is aimed at ensuring that all children have access to adequate nutrition during their school day.
