The City Council of Leganés has approved the creation of the new neighbourhood 'Puerta de Madrid', which will include nearly 4,000 homes, of which 800 will be protected. This development aims to transform the area between Leganés Norte and Arroyo Butarque.
Leganés takes a significant step towards its urban transformation with the approval of the 'Puerta de Madrid' project, which includes the construction of 3,800 new homes. This decision was made in the City Council Plenary, where the Urban Consortium previously known as 'Leganés Norte' was reactivated. The initiative has the support of the Popular Party (PP) and ULEG, while PSOE, Más Madrid and Podemos opposed it.
The new neighbourhood will be strategically located between Leganés Norte and Arroyo Butarque, forming part of the 'Leganés 25-40 Transformation and Development Strategy'. Of the projected homes, 1,500 will be free, another 1,500 will be designated for affordable rentals under the Community of Madrid's Vive Plan, and the remaining 800 will correspond to public protection modalities, specifically VPPB and VPPL.
Aside from the residential development, the Plenary also approved a budget modification to prematurely amortise two loans totalling 21,609,606 euros. This measure will allow the City Council to save approximately six million euros over the next 30 years, according to statements from Mayor Miguel Ángel Recuenco.
However, not all proposals were well received; Vox abstained in several votes and their motion to allow a purchase option on municipal rentals was rejected. In contrast, initiatives such as the creation of a network of climate shelters proposed by Más Madrid and a request to raise LGTBIQA+ flags on public buildings during Pride Day were validated.
Throughout the municipal debate, issues such as the necessary improvements to the public pool El Carrascal and a plan to increase energy efficiency in public schools were also addressed.
'Puerta de Madrid' represents a significant effort by the City Council to address the growing housing needs in Leganés while promoting sustainable and inclusive urban development.
