A warning for the arrival of suspended dust
The Community of Madrid has issued an alert ahead of the imminent arrival of an air mass from North Africa, which will bring suspended dust. This phenomenon, expected this Wednesday, could negatively impact air quality in the region, according to official sources from the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture and Interior.
The data provided by the Centre for Energy, Environmental and Technological Research (Ciemat) and the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) indicate that dust concentrations could range between 5 and 200 micrograms per cubic metre in several areas of the central peninsula, including Madrid. Although authorities assure that no elevated risk to public health is anticipated, they have urged citizens to take precautions.
Although the episode does not pose an immediate danger, vulnerable groups—such as individuals with respiratory issues—are advised to limit outdoor activities. The Ministry has recommended avoiding physical exertion during this period and seeking medical attention if respiratory difficulties arise.
Such atmospheric intrusions are common at certain times of the year and can last from a few hours to several days. Local authorities have emphasized the importance of using public transport as a measure to reduce additional emissions and help mitigate the environmental impact during this episode.
