The forest fire that affected the Sierra Oeste of the Community of Madrid has finally been controlled, which has allowed authorities to lower the level of the Special Civil Protection Emergency Plan for Forest Fires (INFOMA) to Operational Situation 0. Despite this positive development, firefighters and forest agents continue to carry out surveillance work to prevent re-ignition of the fire.
The flames, which started simultaneously in Burgohondo and San Martín de Valdeiglesias, have left a devastating impact on the region. Nearly 77,000 hectares have been burned, severely affecting municipalities such as Navas del Rey and Pelayos de la Presa. In total, around 100,000 people were evacuated and 1,580 homes were damaged. This toll reflects an unprecedented emergency in the area.
As the situation stabilises, authorities have authorised access to the previously evacuated urbanisations. However, residents are warned about the potential risk due to falling trees and other elements damaged by the fire. The Community has urged citizens to report any dangerous situations to the emergency number 112.
Apart from the imminent danger, swimming and water activities remain prohibited in the San Juan Reservoir and Playa del Alberche as a precautionary measure until further notice. The Civil Guard is monitoring these areas to ensure public safety.
