A scandal shaking Móstoles
The city of Móstoles is at the centre of a political storm following serious allegations of sexual harassment that have led the municipal opposition to demand the resignation of mayor Manuel Bautista. This Tuesday, during an extraordinary Plenary session, representatives from PSOE, Más Madrid, Vox, and Podemos joined forces to call for a strong response to what they consider an unprecedented "institutional crisis".
Tensions began when a former councillor from the Popular Party filed a complaint against Bautista for alleged sexual harassment. According to the opposition, this case has placed Móstoles "at the epicentre" of a scandal that not only affects the image of the City Council but also public trust in institutions. Socialist councillor Susana López emphasised that "the most abhorrent thing is that they have not protected the victim; they have tried to protect themselves".
The Socialist Group has openly criticised the PP for prioritising its own image over clarifying the facts. They have also pointed to cuts in equality policies as part of the structural problem facing the municipality. From Más Madrid, Ana Tejero questioned how the internal complaint was handled and accused the ruling party of implementing strategies to discredit the complainant.
Vox also joined the criticism, stating that this crisis has "destroyed institutional credibility in record time". Its spokesperson, Nieva Machín, stressed that there is a difference between the presumption of innocence and political responsibility, urging the mayor to take a "step aside" to safeguard the dignity of the City Council.
Podemos defended that political responsibility does not require immediate judicial convictions but rather exemplary conduct. Their spokesperson Mónica Monterreal highlighted that there is already a formal complaint filed for sexual and labour harassment against Bautista and other related crimes. They also criticised the silence from the Equality department and questioned the minimising statements made by key figures such as Isabel Díaz Ayuso.
Despite the opposition's clamor for his resignation, Manuel Bautista has maintained his innocence and rejected all accusations against him. The PP argues that it has acted correctly throughout the process and insists that there is not enough evidence to support the allegations made.
As this political scandal unfolds, it is clear that the repercussions will be significant for both Bautista and the local Popular Party. The pressure exerted by opposition parties could lead to drastic changes in municipal leadership if this crisis is not resolved quickly and transparently.
