An Unprecedented Confrontation

The Madrid Assembly was engulfed in intense controversy this Wednesday when the deputy from Más Madrid, Marta Carmona Osorio, was expelled from the Study Commission on the impact of drugs. The situation turned chaotic after a series of interruptions by Carmona, who was trying to make her voice heard amid the debate.

The president of the commission, Ismael Sirio López from the Popular Party, had barely begun to lead the session when Carmona requested to intervene to present a document related to the agenda. However, Sirio López indicated that it was not the right time for that. This refusal triggered a series of tense exchanges between the two, where Carmona insisted that her intervention was relevant and necessary.

Tension escalated further when the topic of a recent leak to El Plural was addressed, revealing internal messages from the parliamentary group. The Popular spokesperson denounced this action as a serious act that crossed “a red line” within the political sphere. The situation quickly escalated when other parliamentary groups began to leave the room in protest against what they deemed inappropriate handling by the president.

As the interruptions continued, Ismael Sirio López issued several warnings to Carmona before finally deciding on her expulsion. In a firm tone, he communicated to her: “You are expelled from this commission”, which left those present stunned. This act not only marked a critical moment in the session but also highlighted the deep divisions between the political parties present.

Shortly after being expelled, Marta Carmona took to her social media to openly criticise the president for his disrespect towards the assembly regulations. In her message, she stated: “Not only are you incompetent, but you are also cheats”, making it clear that she had no intention of letting the incident go unanswered.

As the echoes of the incident resonated in the halls of the Madrid parliament, many are wondering how such confrontations will affect the current political climate and whether there will be broader repercussions within the legislative process. The lack of consensus and rising tensions could further complicate future debates on crucial issues such as the social and health impact related to drugs.
