A meteoric rise in Madrid politics
Since her emergence on the political scene in May 2019, Isabel Díaz Ayuso has established herself as a key figure not only in the Community of Madrid but also nationally. Her selection as the candidate for the Popular Party (PP) was initially met with skepticism, but her ability to connect with voters and her management during critical moments have transformed her image.
In March 2021, Ayuso made a risky decision by calling early regional elections. In a context marked by the coronavirus crisis and the break with Ciudadanos, she turned the elections into a referendum on her management. Under the slogan ‘Communism or Freedom’, she managed to increase the PP's seats from 30 to 65, absorbing almost the entire centre-right spectrum.
As seven years have passed since those decisive elections, the regional government presents an optimistic assessment. The Community of Madrid has seen significant growth, already contributing 19.8% of the national GDP. Additionally, it accounts for 62% of all foreign investment coming to Spain.
Under her leadership, approximately 670,000 jobs have been created, reaching nearly 3.9 million affiliates to Social Security. This success is attributed to an aggressive fiscal policy that includes 34 tax cuts since 2019.
Ayuso has promoted significant projects such as the Nurse Isabel Zendal Hospital, built during the pandemic, as well as the modernization of emblematic hospitals like La Paz and Gregorio Marañón. She is also notable for having promoted 40% of all protected housing built in Spain since 2019 through initiatives like the Vive Plan.
Under her direction, Madrid has positioned itself as a regular host for international events and a political showcase for the PP. With an absolute majority and no significant internal opposition within the Madrid party, Ayuso now faces future challenges with confidence.
