A firm stance at the international summit
The Venezuelan opposition leader, María Corina Machado, has reaffirmed her decision not to meet with Spanish President Pedro Sánchez during his visit to Spain. This statement comes in the context of the international summit of progressive leaders taking place in Barcelona, where Machado believes recent events have highlighted the inappropriateness of such a meeting.
Despite her refusal to engage in dialogue with Sánchez, María Corina Machado has had an active agenda in Madrid. On Friday, she met with the presidents of the Popular Party (PP) and Vox, underscoring her quest for support among Spanish political forces. Additionally, she was awarded the Golden Key of Madrid in an emotional event that gathered numerous Venezuelans.
The day will culminate in a significant event: the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, will present Machado with the Gold Medal of the regional Administration. An International Medal will also be awarded to the elected Venezuelan president Edmundo González, who unfortunately will not be able to attend due to health issues. This recognition highlights the ongoing commitment to a democratic and free Venezuela.
During her press conference, María Corina Machado emphasized that there is no other society as united and determined as the Venezuelan one to advance towards democracy. She stated that "the only guarantee of stability for Venezuela is clean and free elections," which is essential for achieving an orderly transition to a democratic system.
To conclude the day, Machado will participate in a gathering organised by the Venezuelan community in Spain, scheduled to take place at the iconic Puerta del Sol. This event promises to be a symbol of collective support for her efforts to restore democracy in Venezuela.
