Más Madrid has decided to run in the 2027 regional elections without the participation of Izquierda Unida (IU) or Movimiento Sumar. The party, led by Mónica García, aims to maintain its electoral strategy that has been in place since 2019, prioritising agreements only in municipalities where both forces have a consolidated presence.
Differentiation between strategies
The decision by Más Madrid marks a clear distinction between its regional approach and the national one. While at the national level efforts are being made to create a joint space with IU and Sumar for the general elections, there are no plans to transfer this alliance to the regional level. Party sources have indicated that agreements with IU will be limited to specific localities where collaboration could be beneficial in achieving progressive majorities.
The model adopted by Más Madrid is similar to that used in Rivas-Vaciamadrid, where they have already collaborated on joint candidacies. This strategy of “variable geometry” allows for opening up to other local organisations when favourable conditions exist. However, it is clear that there will be no representatives from IU or Sumar on the regional list for the Community of Madrid.
As the elections approach, Más Madrid assures that its electoral machinery is active. The primary process has already begun and features a single candidacy led by Mónica García, who also holds the position of Minister of Health. This progress has been achieved thanks to an agreement with regional deputy Emilio Delgado.
The party aims to strengthen its profile as a regional political force with a strong territorial presence. In this context, it is relevant to mention that Podemos has also announced its intention to present its own candidacy led by Ione Belarra. Más Madrid views this decision with “calm,” trusting that it will not negatively affect their electoral expectations.
Despite the rejection of forming a broad coalition for the regional elections, Más Madrid maintains positive relations with IU and Sumar. However, they have advised Podemos to focus its criticisms on Isabel Díaz Ayuso, President of the Community of Madrid, rather than on other forces within the progressive spectrum.
Apart from the link with IU and Sumar, Más Madrid confirms its ongoing alliance with Verdes Equo, an agreement that has already become an integral part of its political structure since previous electoral processes. Additionally, there is an open possibility to incorporate independent profiles into its regional candidacy.
This strategy aims to be compatible with active participation in the collaborative space alongside Sumar and IU at the national level to attempt to revalidate a future progressive government after the upcoming general elections.
