A new chapter in the Madrid political controversy
The political situation in the Community of Madrid is complicated by the recent court summons of Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, chief of staff to President Isabel Díaz Ayuso. Judge Raquel Robles has summoned Rodríguez to testify as a defendant on April 6, following a complaint filed by two journalists from the newspaper El País.
The controversy stems from an incident that occurred on March 19, 2024, when the journalists appeared at the private residence of Ayuso. According to their complaint, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez allegedly shared a photograph and the full names of the reporters in a group chat, arguing that their presence was causing "harassment" to the neighbours, including minors. In his words, this situation was comparable to the "harassment typical of dictatorships".
Despite the initial dismissal of the case by the relevant court, an appeal filed by the complainants led the Provincial Court of Madrid to reopen it. Judge Robles has also requested that the agents present as escorts during the incident be identified. One of them had recognised the journalists while they were conducting what they claimed was an investigation into Ayuso's private residence.
Despite the media uproar and legal implications, the Spanish Agency for Data Protection (AEPD) previously determined that there was no violation by the chief of staff regarding privacy regulations. However, this new development could change the course of the case depending on the testimony Rodríguez provides before the court.
