A possible candidacy that shakes up the political landscape
The Madrid political scene is bracing for a potential shift with the imminent candidacy of Mónica García, the current Minister of Health, who may announce her intention to compete against Isabel Díaz Ayuso in the regional elections in May 2027. Sources close to Más Madrid have indicated that the formal presentation could take place between April 25 and May 1, coinciding with a significant institutional event organized by Ayuso.
Despite the rumours surrounding her candidacy, the party has denied any official movement regarding this. According to internal statements, there is no defined strategy to position García as a candidate, and it is insisted that any decision will be made democratically by the party's grassroots. This approach highlights the importance of the internal process and the collective will within Más Madrid.
Since her arrival in the regional parliament, Mónica García has proven to be an influential figure. In the last elections, she managed to secure 27 seats, surpassing her closest competitor by just 5,000 votes. However, the party faces significant challenges; in the City Council, although Rita Maestre received more votes than the socialist candidate Reyes Maroto, Más Madrid suffered a considerable loss, going from 19 to just 12 councillors.
As the elections approach, party leaders are under pressure to define their electoral strategy. The possibility of other members like Emilio Delgado, who has shown interest in a more prominent role following his ties with Gabriel Rufián, is also on the table. However, those close to Mónica García assert that there are no official candidacies as of now and that any movement will depend on internal consensus.
Although nothing is confirmed yet, many within the party see Mónica García as the best option to face Ayuso and keep Más Madrid as the main opposition force against the PSOE. With internal deadlines still undefined and a changing political environment, all eyes will be on how these events unfold in the coming weeks.
