The Secretary General of the PSOE in Madrid, Óscar López, is running for the party's primaries with the aim of challenging Ayuso in the regional elections. His proposal seeks a significant political change in the region.
Óscar López, current Secretary General of the PSOE in Madrid and Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Administration, has officially announced his candidacy for the socialist primaries with a view to leading the party's list in the 2027 regional elections. In a video recorded in his home district of San Blas-Canillejas, the socialist leader expressed his desire to drive the necessary political change for the Community of Madrid.
“Madrid needs a change. Madrid needs us to be brave,” declared López, who also openly criticized the management of the regional government under the leadership of the Popular Party in recent years. According to him, the regional executive has prioritised private interests over the collective needs of citizens.
In his presentation, the candidate emphasised that it is essential to improve public services and raise the quality of life across the region. Among his proposals are measures related to affordable housing, public education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability. “Housing must be a right for all and not the business of a few,” he stressed.
López also committed to reducing territorial inequalities within Madrid, ensuring that every neighbourhood and municipality must have access to equitable opportunities. “That hope must reach where you live,” he stated while mentioning areas such as Vallecas, Usera, and Carabanchel.
Despite his announcement, so far no other party members have expressed interest in competing in these primaries to lead the Madrid PSOE. However, the electoral process is already underway with other prominent candidacies for the Madrid City Council.
The schedule set by the party indicates that candidacies can be submitted between 2 and 3 July, followed by a phase of collecting endorsements between 4 and 11 July. The informative campaign will take place between 12 and 18 July, culminating in a scheduled vote on 19 July. If a second round is necessary, it will take place on 26 July. This process will be crucial not only to define the socialist candidate but also to establish a strong alternative to the current regional government.
