A trip marked by controversy
Isabel Díaz Ayuso, president of the Community of Madrid, has returned to Spain after a trip to Mexico that has been surrounded by controversies and accusations. The leader has found herself in a political whirlwind after cancelling part of her agenda due to what she describes as an "extreme danger" to her safety and that of her team.
During a recent interview, Ayuso did not hold back in her criticism of the Mexican Government, led by Claudia Sheinbaum, claiming that it boycotted each of the events scheduled during her visit. According to her statements, the Spanish Government was also complicit by not providing the necessary support during her stay in a country with high levels of violence. "They have put my team and me in danger," she asserted firmly.
The controversy began when Ayuso participated in a tribute to Hernán Cortés alongside artist Nacho Cano. This act generated adverse reactions from the Mexican Government, which accused the Madrid president of glorifying the atrocities committed during colonization. In response, Ayuso published a video defending her speech, arguing that she barely mentioned Cortés and focused on highlighting the mestizaje and the alliances between both countries.
Ayuso justified the cancellation of the rest of her agenda after arriving in Xcaret, where she was to attend a gala sponsored by the Community of Madrid. "I cut it off because I didn't want to endanger our team," she explained. The situation became critical when she received information about direct pressures from the Mexican Government to cancel her activities.
Despite Ayuso's strong claims about the lack of support from the Spanish Ministry led by José Manuel Albares, government sources have denied these accusations. They assert that they never received any notification regarding problems or concerns related to safety during the trip and that they even offered usual protection for such cases.
President Pedro Sánchez has also indirectly responded to Ayuso's statements, suggesting that she is known for creating conflicts both domestically and internationally. This situation could have significant repercussions for diplomatic relations between Spain and Mexico if not handled properly.
