An emotional event in the heart of Madrid
Last weekend, Plaza de la Villa became a vibrant stage where hundreds of Venezuelans gathered to celebrate a historic moment: the handing over of the Golden Key of Madrid to María Corina Machado, an emblematic figure in the fight for democracy in Venezuela. Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida, who presided over the event, described this ceremony as one of the most emotional moments since he took office.
For over forty minutes, Machado was surrounded by a crowd expressing their support and affection. Many attendees could not hold back their tears upon seeing their leader, who has been a symbol of resistance against political adversities in her country. Almeida, aware of the significance of the event, chose to stay in the background, allowing all attention to focus on Machado and her reunion with her compatriots.
The mayor also took the opportunity to openly criticise the Spanish Government led by Pedro Sánchez. According to Almeida, while Madrid pays tribute to those fighting for democratic freedoms, President Sánchez seems to align himself with populist leaders like Gustavo Petro. “While we are with liberal democracies, he has decided to cozy up to questionable regimes,” Almeida stated during a post-event interview.
Despite the difficult context facing Venezuela, Almeida expressed his confidence that the true reunion between Machado and her people will happen “sooner rather than later.” This message resonated deeply among the attendees, many of whom keep the hope alive for a better future for their country.
Closing the event on a personal note, Almeida shared that this year he celebrated his first birthday as a father. “Receiving congratulations from a baby is the best thing that has happened to me,” he confessed emotionally. Regarding his future political aspirations, he reaffirmed his desire to govern alone but warned of the risks if he fails to secure the necessary numbers to avoid alliances with more left-leaning parties.
