Controversy surrounding police actions
The recent arrest of former Madrid Assembly member, Serigne Mbaye, has unleashed a wave of criticism towards the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska. The political party Podemos has decided to request his appearance in Congress, arguing that he is directly responsible for the events that occurred during the altercation in Usera.
The incident took place last Thursday when Mbaye was arrested along with six others following a confrontation with National Police officers. According to reports, the former parliamentarian attempted to evade identification by fleeing on foot, which led to a struggle with the police. During this confrontation, five officers sustained minor injuries.
Following his release in the early hours of Friday, Mbaye claimed to have been a victim of "pure and blatant racism" by the law enforcement authorities. This statement has resonated strongly in political and social circles, sparking a debate about racist practices within the State Security Forces and Corps.
Pablo Fernández, Secretary of Organisation for Podemos, has stated that racist behaviour by the Government cannot be tolerated or covered up. In this context, they have submitted a Non-Legislative Proposition (PNL) to demand an independent investigation to clarify the facts and establish accountability.
Not only has Podemos taken action; Más Madrid has also presented a PNL in the Vallecas Chamber. Their proposal aims to increase oversight of police actions by requiring the completion of forms to record stops and identifications. This aims to prevent situations based on racial profiling.
As this controversy unfolds, it remains to be seen how Marlaska will respond to these accusations and whether he will take measures to address the concerns raised by various political and social sectors. Pressure is mounting on him as the debate intensifies over the urgent need for reforms within the police force.
