A growing phenomenon that worries the healthcare sector
The Official College of Nursing of Madrid (CODEM) has revealed disturbing figures regarding violence against healthcare professionals in its latest report, highlighting a 16% increase in recorded assaults during the year 2025. This increase translates to a total of 29 incidents, showcasing a worrying trend that affects the integrity and well-being of those who care for our health.
According to the presented data, nearly half (48.3%) of these assaults were physical, while 41.4% were verbal insults and threats. Additionally, two cases of sexual assault and one case of sexual harassment were documented. The most common profile among the aggressors is the relatives or companions of the patients, which adds an additional layer of complexity to the problem.
Mar Rocha, deputy director to the Presidency of CODEM, has emphasized that this phenomenon is not isolated; it affects all levels of care and is influenced by factors such as stress and impatience in critical situations within the healthcare field. In this context, many professionals have shared their traumatic experiences. Beatriz, a nurse in a hospital unit, recounted how she was threatened by relatives after an incident with a patient. This experience not only jeopardized her physical safety but also her mental health.
Despite the alarming increase in figures, it is estimated that nearly 20% of assaults go unreported. CODEM has called on all professionals to report these incidents in order to adequately assess the problem and seek effective solutions. “Violence can never be part of the job,” emphasizes the organization.
In response to this critical situation, CODEM has launched the campaign ‘Care without fear’, designed to raise public awareness about the negative impact these assaults have on healthcare workers. The initiative aims to promote a safer and more respectful environment for those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.
As the figures continue to rise, it is imperative that both institutions and civil society take concrete measures to protect our unsung heroes: nurses. Violence must not be part of professional practice; it is time to act before it is too late.
