More than 400 cleaning service employees in Alcalá de Henares will use smart wristbands this summer. The measure aims to prevent heat strokes and improve workplace safety.
More than 400 workers from the cleaning and maintenance service in Alcalá de Henares will begin using smart wristbands designed to monitor their body temperature during the hottest months of the year. This innovative initiative is being implemented as part of a preventive protocol aimed at reducing the risk of heat strokes, especially for those who work outdoors.
The wristbands, which are worn on the wrist, are equipped with technology capable of detecting dangerous changes in body temperature. When the device identifies that a worker exceeds the safe threshold, it emits an alert through vibrations and acoustic signals. This allows employees to take immediate action to avoid critical situations such as hyperthermia, an abnormal increase in temperature that can be fatal.
This measure is not isolated; it is part of a broader set of actions aimed at protecting health and workplace safety. Among the strategies already implemented are the constant supply of water, daily information about weather conditions, and recommendations on hydration and sun protection. Additionally, tasks are reorganised during extreme heat waves to ensure that workers have access to shaded areas or air-conditioned vehicles where they can recover if necessary.
The decision to extend the widespread use of these wristbands follows pilot tests conducted last summer, where their effectiveness was evaluated. Positive results led the service to adopt this technology as an essential tool to minimise work-related risks associated with high temperatures.
The City Council and Valoriza have led this preventive strategy with a clear objective: to adapt working conditions to climate change, which has intensified extreme episodes in many regions. This proactive approach not only protects workers but also sets a standard in managing workplace wellbeing in the face of adverse weather.
As the summer season progresses, it is crucial to remember the importance of self-care and to follow the recommendations established by local authorities. Workers should be attentive to their bodies and utilise all available resources to stay safe while performing their daily tasks.
