The Community of Madrid has decided to take a significant step in protecting its most vulnerable citizens by announcing an investment of €18.5 million to acquire 170,000 doses of vaccine against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This decision was approved in the last Governing Council and represents a notable increase, with 70,000 more doses than the previous year, raising the resources allocated to this crucial immunisation by 50%.
RSV is known for causing severe respiratory illnesses, such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia, especially among the elderly. With this new campaign, Madrid aims to protect those over 80 years old, who are part of the group most affected by this virus. Vaccination was officially introduced in 2026 after having previously started immunisation for vulnerable adults and residents in social health centres from 2025.
From September last year to June of the current year, 154,237 doses were administered to the adult population in Madrid's health centres, achieving an approximate coverage of 30% among those over 80 years old who are part of the target group.
The decision to expand vaccination to this age group is based on the positive results obtained from vaccinating infants under one year old during the 2023/2024 season. According to data provided by the regional government, this strategy reduced hospital admissions related to RSV in that population segment by approximately 90%.
