Madrid consolidates its position as a leader in healthcare waiting times, but tensions with the central Government persist

A favourable healthcare landscape in Madrid

The Community of Madrid has closed the year with figures that position it as the region with the shortest waiting times for surgical interventions in Spain. With a total of 80,525 people registered on the waiting list, the average time to undergo surgery is just 50 days, well below the national average of 121 days.

The regional Government has significantly increased the resources allocated to the health sector, reaching 40% of the total budget. This investment has allowed for improvements not only in surgical waiting times but also in waiting lists for diagnoses and consultations, where Madrid continues to lead.

Despite these achievements, relations between the Madrid Executive and the Ministry of Health remain tense. The Health Minister, Fátima Matute, has expressed her concern over what she perceives as a lack of attention from Minister Mónica García. Issues such as the Framework Statute, as well as matters related to medical practice on abortion techniques and euthanasia, are hot topics that generate friction between the two administrations.

Another aspect complicating the situation is the increase in the population census due to the regularisation of immigrants. The Madrid Government criticises the central Executive for not providing the necessary funds to ensure adequate healthcare for this new population. Despite demographic growth, it is the Community of Madrid that has decided to increase its health budget while other decisions are beyond its control.

The difference between Madrid and other autonomous communities is notable. For example, Catalonia has an average surgical waiting list that exceeds 142 days. This further highlights the success of the Madrid healthcare model, which continues to be a national benchmark.

As the new year approaches, Madrid's health authorities are committed to continuing to improve their services and further reduce waiting times. However, resolving the existing tensions with the central Government will be crucial to ensure equitable and efficient healthcare for all citizens.
