An explosion of creativity in the capital
Since 15 April, Madrid has transformed into a vibrant canvas thanks to IlustraweekMadrid, a festival celebrating its third edition. This event, which will run until 3 May, offers more than 70 free activities for all art and illustration lovers.
Over 120 creators, from various disciplines such as comics, animation, and urban art, are participating in this initiative. The programme covers a wide range of sectors, from publishing to culture, including science and education. Activities are spread across more than 50 venues throughout the city, including renowned institutions like Fundación Telefónica, Museo ABC, and new additions like NUGA Castellana.
Under the motto “A fairytale Madrid”, the exhibition Icónica Madrid stands out, taking place at the Espacio Cultural Serrería Belga. In this exhibition, fourteen artists have been selected to illustrate iconic characters and representative symbols of the capital, such as Gloria Fuertes and Manuela Malasaña. This exhibition is a testament to local talent focused mainly on children's and youth illustration.
Aside from the main programme, Ilustraweek also includes the fair Ilustrafest, which took place from 16 to 18 April. This event was held at the Design and Creative Industries Campus of the University of Design, Innovation and Technology (UDIT), where attendees enjoyed interactive workshops and exhibitions.
Not only large institutions participate; unique local venues such as bookstores, galleries, and restaurants are also a fundamental part of the festival. For example, Mistura offers its visitors the chance to create their own illustrated ice cream. Additionally, there is a special cycle dedicated to animation at Sala Equis and illustrated meet-ups at Bastardo Hostel.
Esther Ordax, the festival director and co-director of the magazine El Duende, has emphasised how this event not only promotes emerging artists but also revitalises cultural spaces within Madrid. With such a diverse and inclusive offering, IlustraweekMadrid promises to be a highlight for all those interested in exploring new artistic forms.
