A new boost for healthcare professionals
The Community of Madrid has taken a significant step towards improving the working conditions of over 60,000 workers in the Madrid Health Service (SERMAS). In a recent meeting of the Health Sector Table, a proposal was presented that aims to increase remuneration for those who work on call or during night and holiday shifts. This initiative, which represents an estimated investment of 35 million euros, will be included in the future Budget Law for 2026.
The plan will not only impact doctors and nurses but also non-healthcare staff who perform essential functions in hospitals, Primary Care, and SUMMA 112. The Ministry of Health has highlighted that this measure is part of a broader effort to improve the attraction and retention capacity of personnel in the public system, especially in a context where recruiting new professionals has become increasingly challenging.
Among the proposed improvements is an update to the hourly pay for staff who undertake additional shifts. This includes physicians, residents, and supervisors. Furthermore, significant salary increases are anticipated for those working during night or holiday shifts, reflecting recognition of their dedication and effort.
This is not the first time the Madrid government has taken measures to improve working conditions in the health sector. In recent months, it had already implemented actions such as equalising salaries for special dates like Epiphany night and other days considered significant. The continuity assistance supplement (JAPE) was also expanded for various professionals in specific hospital units.
As Madrid moves forward with this remuneration plan, it is clear that the goal is to strengthen its healthcare system in the face of current challenges. With these initiatives, it is expected not only to improve working conditions but also to ensure more efficient and accessible medical care for all citizens.
