An unprecedented advance in the care of ALS patients
The public Hospital Enfermera Isabel Zendal has taken a historic step in the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) by incorporating the world's first robotic exoskeleton specifically designed for these patients. This innovative device, which was previously used mainly for individuals with severe spinal cord injuries, is now adapted to assist those suffering from this neurodegenerative disease, aiming to improve their quality of life and slow the progression of symptoms.
Elena, known as "patient zero", has been the first to receive this revolutionary treatment. In her second session, which took place this Tuesday, she experienced therapy that can last up to 30 minutes. Other patients already have their sessions scheduled for next week, personalised according to their individual needs.
This exoskeleton is designed to facilitate lower limb training through a system that simulates a physiological movement pattern. It uses weight support and external devices that guide the legs over a treadmill, allowing for more effective rehabilitation. The total investment in this technology amounts to 560,000 euros, partially funded by the European Union's Next Generation funds.
From 6 April, a second robot specialised in treating upper limbs is expected to arrive. This advance is crucial for patients facing functional limitations due to the progressive loss of strength associated with neurodegenerative diseases.
The Health Minister, Fátima Matute, highlighted that the hospital not only focuses on providing medical assistance but also on generating valuable scientific evidence. The first clinical study on the positive effects of this robot-assisted rehabilitation in ALS patients is planned, analysing aspects such as pain, muscle stiffness, and improvement in joint condition.
Through the Ceadela (Specialised Day Care Centre), inaugurated in April 2024, 250 patients have already been attended to, currently maintaining 128 individuals under active treatment. This care model combines robotic physiotherapy with speech therapy and psychological support, in addition to planning to open a new area dedicated to hydrotherapy.
By using the robotic exoskeleton, Madrid reinforces its commitment to the regional ALS Network, which includes important hospitals such as 12 de Octubre, La Paz, and other prominent centres. Furthermore, an innovative clinical trial is underway focused on repairing damaged proteins responsible for motor loss. The strategy will culminate in a new hospital-residential centre specifically for these patients, with construction requiring an estimated investment of 80 million euros.
