Preparations underway for the arrival of the Pontiff
The Spanish capital, Madrid, is in full countdown mode to receive Pope Leo XIV, an event that promises to be one of the most significant in the religious and social calendar of the city. The City Council has decided to mobilise all its resources to ensure that this visit goes smoothly, which includes an impressive deployment of security and services.
According to Inma Sanz, deputy mayor and delegate for Security and Emergencies, 10,000 municipal personnel have been arranged to be available throughout the Pontiff's stay. This operation will not only include the Municipal Police but also Samur-Civil Protection and Firefighters, allowing this logistical effort to be compared to that deployed during international events such as the NATO summit.
Despite recent political tensions between the City Council and the central Government, Sanz emphasised that real work is being done in a technical and collaborative environment. Meetings between security bodies and agencies such as the National Intelligence Centre are crucial to define the operational details of the deployment. “We do not want controversies; our goal is to ensure that everything goes well,” Sanz stated.
However, statements from the Community of Madrid have shown a more critical stance. The Health Councillor, Fátima Matute, urged the Government delegate, Francisco Martín, to focus on the necessary work to coordinate health efforts. Although Matute was not present at the key meeting held recently, she emphasised that all necessary care levels are already being organised to attend to both the Pope and the thousands of expected visitors.
As the date of the event approaches, Matute assured that hospitals are being specifically prepared for this occasion. “We are coordinating all care levels to service this visit,” she highlighted. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure adequate attention not only to the religious leader but also to pilgrims and volunteers arriving in Madrid.
Although expectations regarding the content of the meeting are moderate — Sanz described the meeting as “cordial” but without major news — there is a general consensus on the importance of the event from both a religious and cultural perspective. Local authorities are determined to do everything possible to ensure a memorable experience for both the Pope and the attendees.
