A Complicated Weekend for Allergy Sufferers

The Community of Madrid has issued a warning about the significant presence of plane tree pollen, which will reach high levels this Friday and Saturday. The most affected areas include Getafe, Alcalá de Henares, as well as the Madrid neighbourhoods of Arganzuela and Salamanca.

According to information provided by the Pollen Network, the plane tree is currently in its peak pollination period, causing a massive emission of pollen in a short span. This phenomenon is particularly problematic for those suffering from seasonal allergies.

Aside from the areas with high concentration, medium levels are expected in localities such as Alcobendas, Aranjuez, and the area known as Ciudad Universitaria. Intermediate levels will also be recorded in Alcalá de Henares on Saturday. On the other hand, municipalities like Collado Villalba, Coslada, and Las Rozas will experience low concentrations during this same period.

Various studies have shown that pollen concentrations tend to be higher in urban environments, where the plane tree grows abundantly. In contrast, areas in the northwest and mountainous regions present lower levels due to their less dense vegetation.

For those prone to allergic reactions, it is recommended to take additional precautions during these critical days. Keeping windows closed, wearing masks when going out, and consulting with medical professionals about preventive treatments can help mitigate the adverse effects of pollen.
