A massive breakdown leaves Alcalá de Henares and other localities without water
The situation in Alcalá de Henares has become critical following a break in the water supply network that has affected a total of 44 municipalities. The problem, which originated last Monday in Yunquera de Henares, Guadalajara, has led the City Council to activate a crisis committee to manage the emergency.
Although the main breakdown has already been repaired, the restoration of supply will be gradual. Alcalá, being located at the end of the water system, is one of the last places to regain the necessary flow. To address this situation, immediate measures have been implemented such as sending tankers and distributing bottled water.
The Canal de Isabel II has collaborated by sending tanker trucks that will be available at several Municipal Boards. Residents are being urged to bring their own containers to collect water, although they are advised to wait for confirmation regarding the exact arrival of the vehicles.
The City Council has emphasized that during this crisis, priority will be given to supplying healthcare centres, residences, and schools. This afternoon, the first deliveries began with ten pallets of bottles (80 units per pallet), in addition to the reinforcement with two additional vans transporting more supplies.
Due to the shortage, showers and other non-essential water uses in municipal sports facilities have also been suspended. The recommendation is clear: citizens should use the water resource responsibly and maintain a basic reserve for daily needs.
The Sorbe Community has communicated that although the necessary repairs have been made, the complete recovery of the service will depend on the gradual filling of the reservoirs. Residents are urged to be patient while work is underway to restore normal supply.
As Alcalá and its surroundings face this unprecedented water crisis, it is clear that collaboration between institutions and citizens will be essential to overcome this challenge. The community must remain united and act responsibly while the essential service is restored.
