An unprecedented gesture of solidarity
In an act that reflects unity and solidarity between cities, the City Council of Madrid, under the leadership of José Luis Martínez-Almeida, has decided to donate 40 buses to the city of Burgos. This action comes after the devastating fire that affected the municipal garages in Burgos, leaving half of its fleet out of service.
The mayor of Burgos, Cristina Ayala, has expressed her deep gratitude to all the entities and citizens who have offered their support during this critical time. During a press conference, Ayala highlighted the solidarity commitment that has emerged from different parts of the country, specifically mentioning the mayor of Valladolid, who was one of the first to offer help.
Ayala explained that although multiple offers have been received to help restore urban service, the free loan of buses for six months from the Madrid City Council represents a comprehensive solution. The first vehicles will arrive this Friday along with a truck for maintenance and training for local drivers.
Despite the momentary relief this donation provides, Ayala warned that this measure will not return Burgos to its situation prior to April 20. However, it does provide a necessary respite while more sustainable medium-term solutions are sought. The mayor also mentioned that the current garages need to be relocated to Villalonquejar, which has become urgent after the fire.
The buses will be temporarily located in municipal plots near the damaged garages. Additionally, offices and workshops are being set up to ensure proper maintenance and necessary revenue during this transitional period. The deputy mayor, Juan Manuel Manso, emphasized the importance of caring not only for the vehicles but also for the well-being of the staff affected by this crisis.
Ayala also stressed that the current garages must be demolished through an emergency contract once the police investigation into the causes of the fire is completed. In this regard, she urged caution before making public statements about what happened to protect citizens' interests.
