The controversial decision of the Government regarding immigrant minors
The Community of Madrid is in the midst of a controversy following the Spanish Government's refusal to repatriate 86 unaccompanied immigrant minors. The Minister of Family, Youth and Social Affairs, Ana Dávila, has expressed her intention to take legal action against the Executive, arguing that this decision jeopardises the wellbeing of these young people.
In a letter addressed to the Government delegate, Francisco Martín, Dávila states that the current situation of these minors is alarming. According to her, their conflictuality, which includes behavioural disturbances and drug problems, could lead them to a life marked by marginalisation if they remain in Spain. The minister argues that returning to their countries of origin is crucial to ensure their safety and wellbeing.
The Government Delegation has justified its refusal by citing the lack of guarantees for a safe return. A spokesperson indicated that the best interests of the child are prioritised, which has been questioned by Dávila. She argues that a government truly committed to the rights of minors should not use these young people as “political bargaining chips.”
Dávila not only criticises the Government for its inaction but also warns of the possible legal consequences if this situation persists. “If they continue with this refusal, they will be held responsible along with President Pedro Sánchez,” she warned. The minister emphasises that she will take all necessary measures within her powers to demand accountability.
Despite the delegate's statements about having requested the necessary reports to proceed with the repatriations, Dávila points out an evident lack of diligence on the part of the Government. “It is deeply concerning that they have not acted with the required urgency,” she stated.
As this conflict unfolds, it is clear that there is much more at stake than just administrative issues; it is about the future and wellbeing of these vulnerable young people. The community expects effective and swift responses to an increasingly critical situation.
