A conflict that does not cease
The situation at the Official College of Architects of Madrid (COAM) has become unsustainable, with a legal confrontation threatening to prolong indefinitely. More than a year after the elections on May 27, 2025, the controversy over the validity of the candidacies and the results remains a hot topic among Madrid architects.
The current dean, Sigfrido Herráez, has issued a vigorous statement expressing his concern over the recent actions of the former president of the Electoral Board. Herráez argues that these actions seek to alter the electoral outcome legitimately expressed by the members and lack legal foundation. “There is no firm judicial resolution that allows for the modification of what has already been decided,” he states.
The elections held in May of last year resulted in a victory for the TODOS COAM candidacy, led by Herráez, who received 54% of the votes. This result is considered by many as a clear and democratic mandate to lead the college. However, the dispute has reignited internal tensions and questions regarding the governance of COAM.
As the conflict progresses, contentious-administrative appeals have been filed in various courts, further complicating the situation. Court number 18 has issued precautionary measures preventing any proclamation or administrative action until the litigation is resolved. Herráez emphasizes that these measures must be respected and cannot be ignored by unilateral interpretations.
Despite the administrative chaos, Herráez calls on all COAM members to remain calm and work together towards a peaceful solution. “It is essential to prioritise institutional stability and respect the democratic decisions made by our members,” he concludes his statement.
