A Strong Message in Puerta del Sol
This Tuesday, the iconic Puerta del Sol in Madrid became a stage for peaceful protest as Greenpeace activists unfurled a giant banner with the powerful message "No to war." This act aims to draw the attention of world leaders to the growing military escalation in the Middle East, especially following the recent attacks launched by the United States and Israel against Iran.
The slogan resonating today in the streets of Madrid is not new; it evokes the massive mobilisations that took place during the Iraq invasion in 2003. Greenpeace uses this historical reference to underline its firm stance: "Wars are never the solution. It is time to choose peace." The organisation denounces that armed conflicts only generate more suffering and destabilisation, affecting innocent civilians and destroying the environment.
Through its action, Greenpeace emphasises that wars not only affect people but also leave deep scars on the planet. According to their statements, armed conflicts devastate vital ecosystems, degrade soils, and contaminate water sources. Moreover, they divert resources that could be used to combat the effects of climate change, which disproportionately affects the most vulnerable communities.
In response to Greenpeace's display, Miguel Ángel García Martín, Councillor for the Presidency and Justice of the Community of Madrid, expressed his support for the pacifist message. He stated that while no one is in favour of war, it is crucial not to ignore the atrocities occurring in Iran under an authoritarian regime. "We are all against any war," declared García Martín from a space dedicated to remembering the victims of the 11M attack.
The councillor also highlighted the importance of defending human rights and supporting Iranian women who are facing a critical situation. His intervention underscores a key point: while condemning military violence, it is also essential to address the systematic violations of fundamental rights occurring within the context of war.
As the world faces a dangerous militarised dynamic where brute force prevails over diplomatic solutions, Greenpeace makes an urgent call to prioritise dialogue and seek peaceful alternatives to international conflicts. The organisation insists that it is fundamental to redirect our policies towards a more humane and sustainable approach.
