A year of extraordinary rescues
The Community of Madrid Fire Brigade has demonstrated its commitment to animal life by carrying out 282 interventions during the year 2025. This effort not only highlights the dedication of these professionals but also the growing need for assistance for animals in critical situations.
Felines have been the primary beneficiaries, representing an astonishing 57.8% of the operations carried out. In total, 163 rescues were conducted to free cats trapped in unusual places such as rooftops and vehicle engines. The agility and cunning of these animals often lead them into complicated situations that require professional intervention.
Next, dogs ranked second on the rescue list, with a total of 55 interventions, which accounts for 19.5%. The most common reasons for these assists include accidental falls into ditches or wells and becoming trapped while chasing prey. However, the brigade's work was not limited to just cats and dogs; rescues were also carried out for birds such as storks and other animals like cows and wild boars.
Throughout the year, firefighters faced significant challenges. One of the most notable rescues occurred in March when nineteen horses, two donkeys, and a cow became isolated due to flooding caused by the overflow of the Jarama River. For this complex operation, advanced technology such as drones and a specialized boat was used to ensure the safety of the animals.
Not all rescues are straightforward; some require complex technical maneuvers that can include anything from dismantling appliances to partial demolition of structures. One particularly impressive case was the recent rescue of a dog stuck in a drain six meters underground in Majadahonda. Firefighters managed to access the animal through an underground sewer, demonstrating their ingenuity and determination.
