The Community of Madrid will implement a plan with 58 measures to assist those affected by the recent wildfires. Up to 20 million euros will be allocated for the recovery of the damaged municipalities.
The President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has presented an ambitious plan that includes 58 urgent measures to support the communities affected by the devastating fire in the Sierra Oeste. This announcement was made during an extraordinary meeting of the Governing Council, where the consequences of the disaster were assessed and concrete actions were defined to facilitate recovery.
Among the most notable initiatives, the regional government will allocate up to 20 million euros from the Regional Investment Programme for urgent actions in 17 affected municipalities. This investment aims not only to mitigate immediate damage but also to promote sustainable and effective recovery.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and self-employed individuals will also receive significant support. More than 15 million euros in direct aid has been planned, which includes one-off payments of 5,000 euros to cover the replacement of lost goods and necessary work to clean their facilities. Additionally, similar aid will be offered to ensure the operational continuity of these businesses.
Ayuso emphasized that the plan includes additional incentives for those self-employed individuals who decide to establish themselves in the affected localities over the next year. They will receive an initial economic incentive of 600 euros, which could stimulate the creation of new businesses in areas that need economic revitalization.
Not only businesses are included in this package; ten million euros have also been specifically allocated to assist families with special needs, as well as social health centres facing challenges due to the natural disaster.
Aside from direct financial support, the plan includes logistical measures such as help points and emerging social services for those neighbours returning to their homes after the fire. For those who still cannot return, temporary hotel accommodations will be made available while permanent housing solutions are managed.
The regional government has also announced significant bonuses: among them, an 80% reduction in the water bill, upon request from the affected individuals. This is part of the effort to alleviate the financial burden on families impacted by this crisis.
As the recovery process progresses, local hiring will be prioritised through a specific fund aimed at financing salaries and social contributions during temporary contracts in the affected municipalities. This approach seeks not only to reactivate the local economy but also to provide immediate employment to those in need.
Díaz Ayuso also highlighted specific plans to restore critical infrastructure such as roads damaged by fire; it is estimated that around 200 kilometres will be recovered. There will also be a shared temporary service to facilitate transport within these areas from early August.
This is not the first time Madrid has faced natural disasters; let us remember that five years ago, a similar series of wildfires led the regional government to implement similar although less extensive strategies. The accumulated experience seems to have positively influenced this new, more robust response to environmental emergencies.
