A new boost for urban rehabilitation
The City Council of Madrid has taken a significant step in its commitment to revitalise the urban landscape with the launch of the seventh call for the Rehabilita Plan. With a total budget of €50 million, this initiative aims not only to rehabilitate buildings but also to beautify the facades that bring life to the city.
One of the main innovations in this edition is the inclusion of an additional line dedicated to urban beautification. This approach aims to reduce the visual noise affecting facades and roofs visible from public spaces. Residents who choose this option will benefit from a 5% increase in the grant allocated for energy efficiency improvements.
Since its inception, the Rehabilita Plan has proven to be a resounding success. According to data provided by Álvaro González, delegate for Housing Policies, over €101,000 per building in aid has been surpassed, covering up to 60% of the total cost of the works. Furthermore, the number of applications has grown an astonishing 230% over time.
Throughout the programme, more than 2,400 buildings, equivalent to around 110,000 homes, have been rehabilitated since 2020, with a cumulative investment exceeding €318 million. These actions have benefited over 250,000 Madrilenians, significantly improving their quality of life.
The program is structured around six main lines of action: accessibility, energy efficiency, conservation, healthiness, safety, and the newly added urban beautification line. In terms of accessibility, more than 1,450 interventions have already been carried out, primarily focused on eliminating architectural barriers through the installation of elevators and ramps.
No less important is the positive environmental impact; over 500 actions have been carried out to improve thermal insulation and promote the use of renewable energies. So far, these initiatives have allowed for savings of more than 282 million kWh and prevented the emission of over 67,600 tonnes of CO2.
