In an emotional event, the Municipal Police of Madrid commemorated their patron San Juan Bautista, highlighting the work of their officers and bidding farewell to Commissioner Oskar de Santos Tapia after five years in charge.
The feast of San Juan Bautista, patron of the Municipal Police, was celebrated this Wednesday in the emblematic Paseo de Coches in Retiro Park. The event, presided over by Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida, brought together civil and military authorities to pay tribute to the officers who have stood out for their bravery and dedication. On this occasion, Almeida emphasised the importance of the police force in the security of Madrid, describing it as an "irreplaceable" institution. During his speech, the mayor thanked the police for their "sacrifice, humanity, and professionalism," highlighting that they face new challenges in an increasingly complex environment.
One of the most significant moments was the presentation of the Medals of the Municipal Police, which this year recognised several entities and individuals for their exceptional contributions. Among the awardees was the organising committee of the papal event led by León XIV in Madrid, an operation that required meticulous coordination between various administrations and security bodies to ensure safety during mass events.
Almeida highlighted that this operation represented an "unprecedented organisational and security challenge," which allowed for a positive and secure image of the city to be projected to the world. Additionally, distinctions were awarded to the Archdiocese of Madrid for its historical collaboration with the police force and to the Madrid Mutua Open tournament on its twentieth anniversary.
The event also included recognition for 113 officers who carried out risky or complex interventions. Among them were four police officers who intercepted a stolen vehicle loaded with over 600 kilograms of cocaine, marking a significant recent seizure. Furthermore, two officers were awarded for saving a baby after a choking incident through effective maneuvers before medical assistance arrived.
Other recognitions were given to investigators involved in notable cases such as the fatal collapse in Hileras and those who participated in the Operation Roadrunner, where a drug den was dismantled in Hortaleza.
Apart from the medals, 131 Crosses of Merit were awarded, highlighting members with over ten years of continuous service as well as external collaborators from the judicial and military fields.
The event also marked the official farewell of General Commissioner Oskar de Santos Tapia. After five years leading the police force, De Santos recalled some important milestones during his tenure and emphasised the daily commitment needed to maintain peaceful coexistence in Madrid.
The celebration concluded with a parade featuring various police units such as the Cavalry Squadron and Canine Section. This event was not only a tribute to those who serve daily to protect citizens but also a reaffirmation of the institutional commitment to a safer city.
