A New Era for Madrid
The city of Madrid is about to undergo a significant transformation with the approval of an ambitious programme that includes 11 innovative projects aimed at improving the quality of life for its residents. This plan was presented by Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida during a meeting of the Forum for Madrid, held at the EMT Operations Centre in Carabanchel.
Among the most relevant initiatives is the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Madrid Cable Car, a tourist attraction that promises to revitalise access to stunning panoramic views. Additionally, the restoration of the iconic Cibeles Fountain, a symbol of the Spanish capital, will take place.
No less important is the project to restore the water feature of the Temple of Debod, a space that not only has historical value but also offers a unique natural environment amidst the urban hustle.
The programme also incorporates technological advancements such as AteneIA, an intelligent system designed to monitor and manage municipal urban services, allowing for greater efficiency and sustainability in urban management.
Not all initiatives are public works; the plan includes social and educational initiatives. The Housing Reference project stands out, aimed at providing housing solutions for homeless individuals, thus reflecting a commitment to the most vulnerable sectors. In the educational sphere, the playground of the Public School Javier de Miguel will be renaturalised, benefiting over 400 students in Puente de Vallecas.
Moreover, a classroom dedicated to citizen training on fire prevention will be established, developed by the Municipal Fire Brigade, alongside efforts to combat child bullying through the Madrid Alliance against this social issue.
For the first time since its inception, the Forum for Madrid has integrated three projects directly proposed by private entities and civil organisations. This collaboration between public and private sectors is crucial for achieving effective transformation in the city. Currently, 29 companies and entities are actively involved in the forum.
As we move towards 2026, it is important to remember that during the first two years since its foundation, the Forum has promoted nearly 50 projects and initiatives, benefiting over 2.3 million Madrilenians with a combined investment of nearly 4 million euros. These figures highlight not only the intentions behind the programme but also its real impact on the community.
