Special operation in Madrid for the visit of Leo XIV
This weekend, Madrid becomes the epicentre of an unprecedented event with the arrival of Leo XIV. To facilitate mobility and minimise inconvenience for residents, the City Council has implemented a special parking plan affecting several key neighbourhoods of the city.
From Friday until Tuesday at 23:59, residents of areas such as Justicia, Cortes, Los Jerónimos, and Recoletos will be able to park in any green space of the Regulated Parking Service (SER), regardless of their usual neighbourhood. This measure aims to alleviate the congestion expected due to the massive occupation by coaches for the event.
The arrival of the Pope means that a number of spaces designated for regular parking will be occupied by seven large coach parking areas, capable of accommodating up to 1,360 vehicles over this weekend. The most affected areas include Pitis, where 200 spaces have been reserved; Valdebebas with 220; and the Caja Mágica with a capacity for 250 buses.
As the event progresses, parking regulations will also evolve. From Monday, June 8, only buses that remain in Madrid will be allowed to park in Pitis and the Caja Mágica. Others will need to seek alternatives outside the urban centre.
The operational deployment not only includes changes in parking; several important roads have also been opened, such as the Avenida del Ensanche de Vallecas, where up to 400 additional buses are expected. This coordinated effort aims to ensure that both visitors and residents can enjoy the event without major inconveniences.
