An unprecedented logistical operation
The City Council of Madrid has launched an ambitious parking plan to manage the influx of thousands of worshippers who will visit the city between 5 and 7 June 2026, on the occasion of the Pope's visit. This operation includes the establishment of six park-and-ride facilities, which will offer a total of 1,360 spaces for tourist and discretionary buses.
The initiative aims to prevent traffic congestion in the historic centre, facilitating immediate transfers to public transport networks, such as the Madrid Metro and Cercanías. The strategically selected locations are situated at the northern and eastern access points, as well as in other key areas around the capital.
In the Valdebebas-Zendal area, 220 spaces have been arranged, connected via the corresponding station for lines C1 and C10. At the northern end, another parking facility on the Ronda de la Comunicación offers 150 spaces, close to a Metro station that will further facilitate travel.
However, it is in the southeast where the largest amount of available space is concentrated: a combined total of 400 spaces, covering areas such as the Avenida del Ensanche de Vallecas and Gran Vía del Sureste, with direct access to four key Metro stations.
Apart from the southeast, other sectors also have suitable solutions. The intermodal hub located in Pitis, for example, has capacity for 200 spaces, facilitating connections with various lines of both the Metro and Cercanías. For those arriving from the southern and southwestern corridors, additional spaces have been designated in iconic locations such as the Caja Mágica and Parque del Oeste.
As a result of this plan, all existing reservations for tourist buses within the municipal area will be completely disabled during the mentioned days. Authorities have urged organised groups to strictly follow the guidelines on where to drop off their passengers.
Given the magnitude of the religious event that will attract thousands to Madrid, it is crucial that all travellers adhere to the guidelines set by the City Council. The strategy aims not only to ensure an orderly flow to the central events but also to ensure that everyone can enjoy this historic papal visit without setbacks.
