A new space for the well-being of the elderly
The Madrid City Council is about to conclude the works on an innovative day centre intended for elderly individuals with physical or cognitive impairments, located at calle Téllez, 2, in the Retiro district. This project, which represents a significant investment of €9.2 million, has been co-financed by the Next Generation funds of the European Union and is expected to be operational from next November.
The new centre will have a total of 90 places, evenly distributed between individuals with cognitive impairments and those with mixed impairments. The facilities will cover a total area of 3,983 square metres, organised over four levels, including one underground. The ground floor will be primarily dedicated to the care of individuals with cognitive impairments and will include lobbies, workshops, therapy rooms, a gym, and a dining room.
One of the standout features of the new facility will be its therapeutic garden, strategically designed to promote rehabilitation and socio-emotional development. This outdoor space will not only provide a pleasant environment for users but will also serve as an essential therapeutic tool.
This centre adds to an already existing network of 65 day centres, where preventive and rehabilitative socio-healthcare is offered to elderly individuals. Since 2019, the Area of Works and Equipment has allocated nearly €127 million to the construction and improvement of 31 social facilities, including nursery schools and youth centres.
Within the framework of the ‘Madrid Capital 21’ plan, which spans from 2019 to 2027, a total of 96 new facilities are expected to be built throughout the city. So far, that figure has already been surpassed with 101 facilities built or under construction, reflecting a strong commitment from the City Council towards social welfare.
In addition to the centre located in Retiro, five other social projects are currently being developed in different districts. These include a centre for the elderly in Parque Europa (Latina) and a Family House in Vallecas. With these initiatives, Madrid continues to move towards greater inclusion and support for its most vulnerable citizens.
