The city of Torrejón de Ardoz has inaugurated five climate shelters for seniors, offering recreational activities and daily menus. The initiative aims to combat heat and loneliness among the elderly population.

Torrejón de Ardoz has launched an innovative network of climate shelters aimed at elderly individuals, with the goal of providing a safe and active space during the hottest months of the year. These centres, which will be open during July and August, have been designed not only to protect from the heat but also to promote social interaction and emotional well-being among their users. Each week, around 3,000 elderly people are expected to use these spaces, establishing them as an essential resource in the community.

The main novelty this year is the transformation of the shelters into “Active Shelters”, where various physical and recreational activities are implemented. At the Senior Centre located on Madrid Street, for example, an exercise circuit marked with stickers on the floor has been installed, designed to improve mobility and balance. Additionally, areas dedicated to reading and book exchanges have been set up, as well as social activities such as dances and community gatherings.

It’s not just about staying cool; fresh lemonade at affordable prices will also be offered, promoting proper hydration during heatwaves. Users will receive notebooks with mental exercises and puzzles that stimulate memory. Furthermore, the Municipal Senior Centre will maintain its daily service of healthy meals tailored to the specific nutritional needs of the elderly community.

Ana Verónica González, the councillor responsible for the Senior area, emphasized that these centres aim to be “much more than a refuge from extreme temperatures.” The idea is to create spaces where seniors can socialise and prevent unwanted loneliness through group activities.

Mayor Alejandro Navarro Prieto reminded that this network is not only active during the summer; it also provides protection against winter cold by offering climate-controlled spaces suitable for the colder months. This comprehensive approach reflects a continuous commitment to the well-being of the most vulnerable citizens.

Torrejón has five centres strategically distributed throughout the city: San José, El Parque, Avenida de Madrid, La Cañada, and Calle Madrid. All of them have extensive hours to ensure that any elderly person can access these services without difficulty.

As temperatures continue to rise due to climate change, initiatives like these are essential to ensure that our seniors have access to both physical and emotional resources. For those interested in visiting these shelters or participating in scheduled activities, they can go to any of the mentioned centres during their established hours.
