Surely this has happened to you. You’re on a terrace with friends, mentioning that your coffee machine is starting to fail, and just an hour later, you open Instagram or read a digital newspaper and there it is: an ad for a discounted espresso machine. The feeling is immediate, chilling and almost universal. We have all felt that cold shiver down our spine thinking that our devices are spying on us. The conspiracy theory is seductive because it is simple: Facebook, Google or Amazon have the microphone activated and listen to our conversations to serve us tailored ads.
However, the technical reality is far less cinematic, although perhaps much more unsettling due to its mathematical effectiveness. They don’t need to listen to what you say because their prediction systems are so advanced that they already know what you’re going to want even before you verbalise it.
The technical infeasibility of mass audio spying
To understand why it is highly unlikely that you are being recorded, we first need to look at the numbers. If platforms like Facebook or Google recorded everything their billions of users say 24/7, the amount of data generated would be absolutely unmanageable.
The problem of processing and battery
Processing natural language in real-time requires immense computing power. If your mobile were analysing every word you say locally, your battery would drain within hours and the phone would overheat in your pocket. On the other hand, if it sent the audio to the cloud for processing, you would see a brutal data consumption on your monthly bill. The physics and economics of data work against the microphone theory.
What these companies do is use activators or triggers (like “Hey Siri” or “Ok Google”), which operate with a low-power chip waiting only for that specific phrase. Everything else, technically, is discarded.
The real spies: metadata and correlation
They don’t need your voice because they have something much more valuable and easier to process: your digital footprint. Current programmatic advertising is based on cross-referencing millions of data points that we voluntarily (or almost unconsciously) provide every day.
Tell me who you hang out with and I’ll tell you what you buy
This is where the “magic” that seems like audio spying comes in. Geolocation is key. If you spend two hours with a friend who has been intensely searching for mountain bikes on Google last week, social media algorithms detect that your mobiles have been together in the same GPS location for a significant amount of time.
The system assumes a transfer of interests. The algorithm’s logic is: “Subject A (you) has a demographic profile similar to Subject B (your friend). Subject B wants a bike. They have been talking (or at least, being together). It’s likely that Subject A will be receptive to a bike ad.” They didn’t listen to the conversation; they cross-referenced your locations and search histories.

Aside from technology, there is a fundamental psychological component: the frequency illusion, also known as the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon.
Our brain seeks patterns
We see thousands of ads a day and our brain ignores 99% of them. You’ve probably seen ads for coffee machines many times in the last month, but since your coffee machine was working fine, your brain filtered them out as “noise.”
The day your coffee machine breaks and you verbalise it, that ad that was always there suddenly becomes relevant and your attention is drawn to it. It seems to you that it appeared magically right after you talked about it, but the reality is that you’ve just started to notice it now. Advertising technology plays with this selective perception to reinforce the idea that they are omniscient.
How to really protect yourself from tracking
If you are concerned about your privacy, covering the microphone or uninstalling apps is not the most effective solution if you continue to give away your metadata. The battle for privacy is not fought in audio, but in tracking permissions.
Managing permissions and cookies
The most effective thing is to review the location permissions of your apps. Does that flashlight app really need to know where you are? Probably not. Limiting access to GPS and disabling cross-site tracking is much more useful than whispering near the phone.
Big tech companies are not movie villains with headsets listening to your secrets; they are efficient accountants managing gigantic databases. They know so much about you from what you do, not from what you say.
