An innovative proposal for the astronomical phenomenon
On 12th August, Madrid will prepare for an unprecedented astronomical event: a total solar eclipse. In this context, the political formation Más Madrid, led by Mónica García, has presented a Non-Legislative Proposition (PNL) in the Assembly of Madrid that aims to guarantee the safety and accessibility of the phenomenon to all citizens. The proposal includes the free home delivery of approved glasses, ensuring that no one misses the opportunity to enjoy the celestial spectacle.
Although the Community of Madrid has already established 31 authorised points for observing the eclipse, where approved glasses will be distributed, Más Madrid argues that it is essential to offer universal access. The PNL highlights that mass delivery to every home would prevent the use of dangerous homemade methods to observe the eclipse. However, local authorities consider this measure unnecessary, given that they have already taken appropriate precautions.
One of the most controversial aspects of the proposal is its insistence on incorporating a gender perspective throughout the programming related to the event. In section 6.5 of the document, Más Madrid demands a balanced representation of women in the spaces dedicated to scientific dissemination during the eclipse. This initiative has sparked debate about how this approach can be applied to an astronomical event.
In addition to the free distribution of glasses, Más Madrid proposes creating a programme called "Madrid under the sky". This plan aims to establish a public network that allows citizens to observe the eclipse from squares, parks, and educational centres across the region. The idea is to ensure that everyone has access to the phenomenon, regardless of their place of residence.
Apart from the astronomical event, Más Madrid links this celebration to increased investment in science and education. The political formation calls for a significant increase in funding for public universities and research careers, proposing to reach 3% of the regional GDP in R&D+i. According to its representatives, without these prior efforts, events like the eclipse could become mere “advertising showcases” with no real impact.
