A new DANA brings winter surprises to the capital
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a yellow warning for the Community of Madrid, anticipating the arrival of snowfall that will affect the region over the coming days. This meteorological phenomenon, known as DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels), is expected to bring a white blanket that will cover various mountainous areas.
The warning will be active from 21:00 hours on Monday, March 9 until noon on Tuesday, March 10. During this period, snow accumulation could reach up to 5 centimetres in 24 hours, especially at altitudes above 900 metres. However, it is estimated that only in areas above 1,100 and 1,200 metres will the snow settle properly.
As Tuesday progresses, the sky will remain overcast, and mist and fog may be observed in mountainous areas. The towns most likely to receive snow include Cercedilla, Somosierra, Rascafría, Navas del Marqués, Robledo de Chavela, and Buitrago del Lozoya. The snow level will begin between 900 and 1,100 metres, but is expected to rise progressively to stabilise around 1,800 metres.
Not only Madrid will experience this phenomenon; the DANA will also impact other regions such as the Cantabrian Mountains and the Central System. In these areas, snowfall will begin from levels between 1,300 and 1,500 metres, although there is a possibility that this level may drop to 800 or 1,000 metres in the northeast of the country.
Despite the initial impact expected, according to statements from the AEMET spokesperson, it is likely that conditions will improve significantly by Wednesday as “the DANA moves south and loses influence.” This suggests a gradual return to more stable conditions after the phenomenon passes.
