Pilar Rodríguez Losantos is one of those names that, if you move even tangentially through the world of politics or media in Spain, it becomes impossible not to know. A political scientist, high-level advisor, one of the most sought-after spin doctors in the country, and, since October 2023, non-executive president of Okdiario. A résumé that, at just 32 years old, could fill several pages of Wikipedia. Or at least this one.
Origins and academic training
Pilar Rodríguez Losantos was born in Murcia in 1993. A true Murcian who ended up conquering Madrid, like so many others, but with the particularity that she did it through arguments rather than through petty politics. She graduated in Political Science from the Autonomous University of Madrid and later expanded her training with a master's degree in Political and Corporate Communication, pursued in a dual format between the University of Navarra in Spain and The George Washington University in the United States.
An academic combination that is not exactly what one would expect from someone wanting to work in a public-facing role at a greengrocer's. Two institutions of enormous prestige, two countries, and a specialization that pointed from the beginning towards high-level political advising.
Career as a consultant and spin doctor
Between 2013 and 2019, Rodríguez Losantos developed her activity as a freelance communication consultant and spokesperson trainer for politicians, executives, and figures from the television realm. Basically, she was the person who taught others how to speak well in public. Given the state of Spanish politics, this was a job with virtually unlimited demand.
Among her most well-known students was Pedro García Aguado, presenter of the show Hermano mayor. Yes, the same one who tried to steer rebellious teenagers back on track. That she trained him in oratory certainly has a narrative coherence.
Her leap into high-level political advising came with heavyweight names. She worked as a strategic advisor for leaders such as García Albiol, José Ramón Bauzá, and José Luis Martínez-Almeida, becoming regarded as the most influential woman in the Madrid City Council during her time alongside the current mayor.
The stage with Almeida and the path to Okdiario
Rodríguez Losantos served as chief strategist for José Luis Martínez-Almeida on his path to an absolute majority, a campaign that resulted in the outcome we all know. Almeida won. She, without appearing on any electoral poster, also won in her own way.
Before arriving at Okdiario, there was an interesting chapter. The president of Aragón, Jorge Azcón, tried to recruit her to perform the same strategic functions in his team that she had carried out alongside Almeida. But the recruitment did not materialize. It was Eduardo Inda himself who, at the first day of OKlíderes held at the Westin Palace Hotel in Madrid, announced the recruitment with a joke: "We’ve stolen her from Azcón." The Aragonese president was present. The discomfort in the room was presumably moderate.
President of Okdiario: the institutional position
Rodríguez Losantos was appointed non-executive president of Okdiario with the aim of expanding and strengthening the newspaper's institutional relations, presiding over the board of directors of its publisher. The CEO remained Eduardo Inda, while she took on the direction of the board and the responsibility for the medium's public relations.
From that position, she has promoted her own projects. She was the promoter of the Entre Líderes format, a political debate event without moderators or third parties, which she herself described as "an innovative format that has never been done before in Spain." The first meeting brought together the presidents of Murcia and the Valencian Community, Fernando López Miras and Carlos Mazón.
Media presence and television debates
If her institutional role at Okdiario already places her on the map, her television presence is what has made her a recognizable face to the general public. She regularly participates in programs such as Espejo Público on Antena 3 and En Boca de Todos on Cuatro, where her direct and confrontational style has established her as one of the most influential young voices of the Spanish media right.
Her debates are not usually peaceful. Her clashes with figures such as Afra Blanco, Arantxa Tirado, Pilar Velasco, or Óscar López have become regular content in political discussions, with moments circulating on social media with the characteristic speed of anything that generates anger or admiration, depending on whom you ask.
The milestone of debate: world runner-up
Before all of the above, there was an achievement that perhaps best summarizes what Pilar Rodríguez Losantos has within her. In July 2015, she participated as a member of the Spanish delegation in the World Debate Championship held in Bogotá, Colombia, where she received the individual award for the second-best speaker in the world, being the first woman in the overall count, and became runner-up alongside the rest of the team.
Second-best speaker in the world. At 22 years old. Not bad for someone who would later dedicate herself to teaching others how to speak.
Personal profile and public projection
In addition to Spanish, Rodríguez Losantos speaks English, French, Italian, and Catalan, which only reinforces that profile of a communicator trained to operate in multiple contexts. Her Murcian origin is something she proudly claims wherever she goes, being an identity trait that she keeps present even in her public projection from Madrid.
At 32 years old, with a career that combines academia, high-level political advising, and the management of one of the most-read digital platforms in Spain, Pilar Rodríguez Losantos is, whether one likes it or not, one of the most complete profiles in Spanish political communication of her generation. The kind of trajectory that, when read in one go, makes you question what you have been doing all this time.
