The President of Madrid Warns About the Electoral Impact of Mass Regularisation of Immigrants

The President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has raised an alarm about the possible consequences that the mass regularisation of immigrants could have on the upcoming regional elections. During a press conference held this Wednesday at the Town Hall of Tres Cantos, Ayuso stated that this process could alter the distribution of up to ten seats in the regional Assembly.

Ayuso highlighted that it is estimated that around 2,300,000 people could be affected by this measure, which would represent a significant increase in the electoral roll in the Community. According to her calculations, more than 500,000 people could be added to the Madrid electoral roll, which would generate a 10% increase in the electoral registrations.

Additionally, the president expressed her concern about the new system for verifying the digital ID that will be implemented from April 4. Ayuso questioned the speed at which this process is being carried out and suggested that it could lead to issues such as identity theft. "It has not been adequately verified at the polling stations," she warned, referring to previous experiences in other autonomous communities.

Ayuso also criticised the central Government for what she considers a lack of foresight regarding the current needs of the country. "We do not have enough doctors or adequate infrastructure to cope with these mass regularisations," she emphasised, highlighting existing problems in sectors such as healthcare and public transport.

The president demanded clarity on how this process is being managed and requested explanations from the Ministry led by Félix Bolaños. In her view, it is essential to understand how these decisions can affect not only public services but also the democratic balance during elections.

Despite her criticisms, sources from the regional Government have explained that the new system for verifying digital IDs will use webcams to scan QR codes and cross-check information with official databases. This method aims to ensure greater security during administrative procedures and access to public venues.
