A bold attack in the heart of Madrid
On the night of last Monday, the Salamanca district became the scene of an attempted express kidnapping that left the local community in shock. A 33-year-old Canadian businessman was approached by several men as he left the Lobito de Mar restaurant, located on the exclusive Claudio Coello street. The assailants attempted to force him into a van with the primary aim of gaining access to his digital assets, specifically the keys to his cryptocurrencies.
Fortunately, the decisive action of witnesses who witnessed the event proved crucial in preventing what could have been a tragic outcome. After alerting the authorities, the National Police deployed an operation that quickly located the van used by the criminals in the vicinity of Atocha. Two men, aged between 32 and 45, were arrested during this operation.
During the search of the vehicle, officers found plastic ties and a blister pack of pills that are suspected to have been administered to the victim to facilitate his capture. The businessman sustained injuries during the attack and was taken to a hospital for appropriate medical attention.
Initial investigations suggest that this attempted kidnapping was not an impulsive act, but part of a meticulously designed plan. The GPS found in the van indicated the destination as the Alicante town of Petrer, which is typical in such crimes where kidnappers seek to quickly remove their victim from the urban area to complicate any police response.
Although the assailants also attempted to steal a watch valued at approximately 100,000 euros, authorities believe this was merely a secondary distraction. The true motivation behind the attack appears to be access to the businessman’s cryptocurrencies, indicating a growing concern about how criminals are adapting their methods to the digital boom.
The detainees are reportedly linked to a criminal gang originating from Serbia and had travelled from Barcelona specifically to carry out this operation. This detail reinforces the theory that the businessman had been under prior surveillance and that his movements were being monitored due to his cryptocurrency-related activities.
