An unexplored space transforms into art
In the heart of the Salamanca district, a little-known corner of Madrid is about to become the cultural focal point. The headquarters of Banca March opens its doors to a unique exhibition that presents for the first time in Spain the impressive works of British sculptor Thomas Houseago. This event, celebrating the centenary of the institution, offers Madrid residents and visitors the chance to explore a garden normally closed to the public, now transformed into a free open-air museum.
The artistic intervention includes seven monumental sculptures strategically distributed throughout the garden, creating a visual dialogue between the works and their natural surroundings. These pieces are made from diverse materials such as bronze, aluminium, and plaster, standing out not only for their imposing size but also for their ability to interact with the vegetation and ponds of the site. Among the most notable works are Large Walking Figure I (Leeds) and Janus – Mirror – Figure, where Houseago merges classical elements with contemporary influences.
The exhibition not only showcases the artist’s unique style but also reflects his ability to integrate modern cultural references with sculptural tradition. Houseago creates a visual universe where elements of classical art coexist with references to current popular culture, from cinema to music. This approach allows each sculpture to be appreciated not only as an isolated work but as part of a broader artistic experience within the garden.
Often overlooked by passersby, the Banca March garden spans over 1,600 square metres and combines contemporary art with carefully designed landscaping. This temporary exhibition is a rare opportunity to access this private space that usually remains closed to the public. Additionally, it already houses other contemporary works that further enrich its cultural offering.
Those interested can visit this unique exhibition from May 1 to October 30, 2026. The usual hours are Monday to Saturday and holidays from 10:00 to 20:00; on Sundays, it will open until 14:00. It is recommended to check specific hours before planning a visit to ensure access to the venue.
Through this initiative, Banca March not only celebrates its centenary history but also promotes access to contemporary art in unexpected spaces. This fusion of nature and sculpture offers a different cultural experience in the heart of the urban centre, inviting everyone to discover this hidden garden while enjoying the exceptional talent of Thomas Houseago.
